Tungsten alloy application

Tungsten can be used in a granular form to provide balance weight when used as simple ballast. However, more advanced applications form an actual component out of a suitable tungsten alloy making it a functioning part of a final assembly. Examples of this are found in aerospace (wing balances), defense (missile fin balance) and motorsport. Other application areas include computer disk balances, ordnance (kinetic energy penetration), marine balancing components and gyroscope components.

Tungsten alloy radiation shielding
Experts find that radiation exposure could be reduced by maxing shielding. The density of a material is related to its radiation stopping ability. Higher density means better stopping power and shielding. Due to a higher density, tungsten alloy has a much higher stopping power than lead. Its greater linear attenuation of gamma radiations means that less is required for equal shielding. Alternatively equal amounts of tungsten alloy shielding provide diminished exposure risks than equivalent lead shielding.
Tungsten medical shielding
Tungsten alloy is ideal for shielding against X rays and gamma radiation. The very high density of tungsten shielding (more than 60% denser than lead) allows a reduction in the physical size of shielding components, without compromising their rigidity or the effectiveness of the shielding characteristics.
Research radiation shielding
Nuclear research establishments use nuclear reactors or cyclotrons to study or create radioactive materials. The very high density of tungsten shielding (more than 60% denser than lead) allows a reduction in the physical size of shielding components, without compromising the effectiveness of the shielding characteristics.
Tungsten alloy in aerospace
Tungsten alloys are generally used by aerospace designers for balancing components or reducing vibration. The high density of tungsten materials allows maximum sensitivity from optimum mass and is particularly valuable in situations where a large mass has to be contained in a confined space.
Parts for industrial furnace
We manufacture the hot zones (pure molybdenum, ML molybdenum, TZM molybdenum, tungsten, and tantalum), heating elements, hearth assemblies and other refractory metal furnace components for the thermal processing industry according to customer’s drawings and specifications
Hot metal working
Tungsten alloy can save time and money in hot metal working. The high tungsten content offers good resistance to thermal cracking, erosion, soldering and the effects of heat cycling in hot metal working processes.
Tungsten alloy shot
Tungsten alloy shot is used as the shot of shotgun, hunting sphere. A shotgun is a firearm that is usually designed to be fired from the shoulder. The shot pellets from a shotgun spread upon leaving the barrel, and the power of the burning charge is divided among the pellets, which means that the energy of any one ball of shot is fairly low.
Ordnance components
Manufacturing techniques and additives allow us to vary certain properties, such as elongation, ultimate tensile strength, and hardness, of our tungsten alloys in order to meet your needs.
